PARTY-SAN OPEN AIR

7th-9th August, 2008 : Bad Berka, Germany

The nearest rail station to the festival is Bad Berka. It's better going to the festival by car,but otherwise you can get there from the station by foot, then it takes about 30 minutes. A couple of supermarkets are around the station. A supermarket closest to the Bad Berka station is called Rewe Konsummarkt, and the opening hours are 6:00-20:00(not sure about week ends). They sell alchol. A pub called Fuchsbau is next to the supermarket. A pharmacy(appotek) and Wettiner Hof(hotel) are around there as well.

There's no shower room at the camping site, but a sink is available, and there're several spots to take a shower around Bad Berka. Any accommodation there tend to be busy in the summer time,so it's better to book it as soon as possible if you prefer not camping.Information about accommodation such as hotels, pensions and guest rooms is available at www.bad-berka.de.

10th-12th August,2006-Bad Berka, Germany

10th August(Thu)
We got to the Hanover airport, then took the train to Bad Berka where Party-San Open Air is held every year. Several other metallers who'd be heading to the festival had already been drinking on the same train as well

We booked a room really late this year, so all accommodation in Bad Berka were full, then we found it in a village called Tonndorf that was about 6km away from the festival site at last. Actually the local bus was operated to Tonndorf from the Bad Berka station, but its numbers were just a few a day, so we tried to get on a taxi. A few taxies run there as same as any other small villages, so some groups were in a queue for a taxi. Most people were supposed to go to the festival site directly from the station, but we needed to check in a guest house at first.

After a while, we found the festival site was on the way to Tonndorf and it would cost 10 euros per way to the festival site, so we shared the taxi with several others. After they got off the taxi at the festival site, we went further way. We wished we had booked a room earlier and then it would have been somewhere in Bad Berka at first. But we simply changed our mind just after we looked at our room in Tonndorf. It consisted of a bed room, a dining kitchen, a wide entrance and a shower room, besides there were even some cooking facilities in the kitchen Breakfast wasn't included, but a cafe was close there. Even a satellite TV was in the bedroom, but surprisingly it cost just 18 euros per day It means it costs 9 euros per day per persn in this room. This guest house is "Holiday house rental-Barbara Salzmann"(Ferienwohnung Vermietung-Barbara Salzmann), so check it out if you look for accommodation around Bad Berka.

It had been dark and chilly when we were heading to the festival site. All bands were playing at the tent stage at that night, and we saw Hate at first. Actually it was one of the band I wanted to see in the festival this year. The tent stage was flooded with audiences and I got there a bit late, so it was really difficult to go around, then I managed to take just a few low-quality pictures. The audiences were really excited, then I thought the numbers of audiences were increased and atmosphere was even more enthusiastic comparing with this festival which I went to 2 years ago. A plenty of great death metal bands are in Poland, and Hate was definitely one of them as well. Cool band

I'd been in a queue to take pictures for a Swedish black metal band Watain as It would be difficult to move around after the gig started. Surprisingly, not only the numbers of audiences but also the one of photographers increased although it was the first night Starting their gig, a lot of audiences gained in front of the stage again, then the temperature in the tent become even wormer although it was quite cold outside. By the way I thought a vocalist was wearing a same Mayhem's T-shirt as he did in a tour with Dissection about 2 years ago as well, so was it like a stage costume??

I was so hungry after the gig as I started to see the show just after getting to the festival site, so I hadn't got the time to eat. A point I'm looking forward to visit this festival is food. Many kinds of meals are served in most festivals, but I think food in this festival is one of the best I've ever eaten. Besides the price is inexpensive. So, I was filling my stomach up by a tasty meal and some glasses of beer before getting back to the guest house.

On the second day of the festival, all bands were playing at the main stage. Talking about the meal again, I ate a burger at first. We shouldn't compare it with any others from big chains like MXc Dxxxxd nor Bxxxr Kxxg, because it was much tasty When I saw some food stands, I recognized that staff working there were wearing globes. It seemed they really cared to keep anything clean, so it was a great service.

The first band I saw at that day was Kaamos. Quite many swedish bands were playing at the festival, for example Watain played at the previous night, and Kaamos was from Sweden as well. I'd heard the band's name, but it was the first time to see their gig.

When the audiences had been warming, Dutch death metallers Severe Torture appeared on the stage. The audiences who had been wearing long sleeves started to put them off as well, then gathered in front of the stage and was excited of the gig It was chilly and cloudy in Bad Berka, but the audiences was heat up, the temperature was going up gradually.

The running order was changed a bit at that day. At first, German Dew-Scented that should have played at 18:00 was cancelled, then Fall Of Serenity was replaced instead. Moreover, the time schedule for Fall Of Serenity and Destroyer 666 swapped. Destroyer 666 played their gig after a long time, so awaited audience was heading in front of the stage and greet the band enthusiastically Alan who is a vocalist of Primordial joined for a song about the end of their show, then everybody enjoyed it.

Swedish black metallers Nifelheim started playing when it had been chillier. But, of course both the stage and the audiences were heated! Quite many swedish bands played at this festival, and I saw their gig for the first time, but I liked them. Their gig was cool and aggressive, then the crowded audiences were so excited as well.

When it had been dark, Lord worm who was a vocalist of Cryptopsy appeared on the stage with his roaring-like voice. Then technical guitar sounds and drumming covered the festival site. They were touring in Europe around February this year, and are going to hit the Scandinavian countries in September Check it out their schedule!

While drinking some beer and I was taking a break, Kataklysm had started to play. They're a Canadian death metal band, but they tour in Europe quite often, so it seemed both the band and the audiences were familiar each other. So I understood the vocalist told that their gig at that night was recorded for the DVD as well. Some piles were used and it decorated their stage even more gorgeous.

We needed a taxi to get back to the guest house, so we asked a security standing around the entrance to the festival site to call it. It's quite hard to call the taxi if you don't understand German, but then just ask somebody who does it around you

It had been mostly cloudy since the festival started, but fortunately it never rained while the bands played. When Irish Mourning Beloveth started to play, it was quite sunny. I know some audiences were from Ireland, then they cheerfully and energetically supported the band's show. Of course the band replied to them well as well

I thought it was really warm when this festival is held in Bad Berka every year,as it was so when I went to this festival in 2003 for the first time. But it seems it was just unusually warm at that summer Basically it didn't rain when the bands played, but it was quite chilly even in the day time. So,you should bring some long sleeves not to catch a cold!

Rompeprop was a Dutch-trio band that was playing when we were walking around the festival site. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures of them, but their gore metal-like songs sounded quite cool. I guessed people who were interested in the bands like Haemorrhage may have liked them. The vocalist's MC was funny as well. If I have any chances to see their gig again,I'll focus them more.

A swedish black metal band Setherial started to play around 19:00. This band can be recommended to people who likes the black metal bands such as Dark Funeral. It had been chillier again, but it didn't matter for the excited audiences!

The next band I saw was also from Sweden, Thyrfing. The Swedish bands playing at this festival this year were mostly black metal, so Thyrfing's originality may have been focused a bit more than usual. I saw their gig after a long time and their songs sounded comfortably for my ears. I need to buy their CDs

A veteran Swedish black metal band Marduk appeared on the dark-atomospheric stage. No matter how the members had changed, Marduk was marduk. They showed aggressive and energetic performance as usual. They'd played so many times especially in Europe, but their gig still deserved to attract a lot of audiences.

That was the last summer festival this year for me, besides it was quite cold every night, so as soon as I left the festival site, my mind was filled by the autumn feeling Anyway I made a good memory again, about exciting gigs, tasty food, nice host family in the guest house etc. But I should have brought warmer clothes Of course I will in the next summer!

It was the second time to see that festival.I was staying a guest room where was close to Bad Berka, different from last year, while the festival was held.It was fine and warm when I got to the station,so I didn't expect it would be rainning later...So I had an umbrella in my backpack, but I didn't bring it to the festival site.

I left the guest room before 21:00,and it was ok at first, but it started rainning on the way to the festival.More getting close to the festival site,it was rainning heavier, and it rained in buckets when I arrived there
A lot of audiences had already been camping, and it seemed there were more people than last year.It was getting to be chilly outside because of rainning, but it was warm and humid in the tent stage where was full of metal heads
It was getting to rain heavier while bands were playing, and finally it became thunder storm ,but I couldn't really distinguish which were flashes from the cameras or lightning It was fun while I was watching the gigs, but I started to be worried how I'd be able to get to the guest house,as I didn't bring any umbrellas, however I bumped into a friend who was from London and camping,so I supposed I'd be able to stay there if it wouldn't have stopped rainning. When it was around midnight, quite many audiences were getting drunk, and a guy fell down on the muddy ground, and he was brought by the security later
Fortunately,it stopped rainning when Purgatory finished to play,so expecting about the next day,I could get to the guest room by foot.

It managed to stop rainning at the second day, although the festival ground had still been quite muddy. The numbers of tents were more spread to the other side of the festival site as well. And,Also autograph session was held by several bands from that day.
Fleshcrawl was playing without a bassist, but they performed so good that the audience didn't recognize it.

Haemorrhage started to play around 18:45.Actually I was looking foreword to see them the most in that festival,as every time their show was enthusiastic.Another guitarist who was a Spanish girl wasn't playing at the festival,so I was quite disappointed about it( I know that not only me but quite many guys were so as well ),but their gig was brilliant as usual.I heard they wouldn't play this year,as they would be recording their new album.I think open festivals do really go with them,so I expect to see their gig somewhere next year again...

Haemorrhage

It was chilly at the second night, but the audience kept being keen on watching the gigs 2 female sexy dancers(?) were at back of the stage while Carpathian Forest was playing,so guys may have been more excited!?
Unleashed was the last band at that night.A vocalist mentioned about that recent years his important friends such as Chuck Schuldiner(Death) and Quorthon(Bathory) had past away,so they played a song from a Death's album as tribute.

Audience!

After all,it rained only the first night,so other days were fine, even if it was sometimes cloudy. At the last day, a part of the running order was changed,as Heaven Shall Burn was replaced to Graveworm.
Vomitory had been looking for a new vocalist before because the present vocal/bassist had wanted to play only the bass, but they dicided to continue by present members,so they were playing as usual.
Misery Index was only non-European band at the festival, and the audience reflected excitingly

Dark Funeral was playing as the last band in the final day. There were a little sound problem only at the beginning, but their performance was splendid as usual.

I've seen this festival these 2years,and it's one of my favorite festival.I like not only gigs, but also food menu at the festival site. They're inexpensive, and besides quite tasty A host family who was a landlord of my guest room was warm and understanding,so I really enjoyed staying in Bad Berka.
I'm looking foreword to see which bands are going to play next summer!

7th-9th August,2003-Bad Berka, Germany

It was the second summer-open festival this year,as we were traveling around Germany to see some gigs.We expected there would be some public transport to get a festival from the nearest station, but unfortunately we could just get there by foot. Then,we thought the festival site wouldn't be really far from the station, as some sign posts showed the way,but eventually it took about 30 minutes
Actually not many people were there at the first day,so we could keep a space for our tent easily. There were 2 stages which one was a tent stage and another was an open-air stage at the festival site, and most bands played at the opened one.

A lot of audiences arrived one after another at the second day by cars. There was no shower room at the camping site,so we seriously thought how we'd be able to take a shower
Firstly,we considered to book a room in a hotel which was around the nearest station, and take a shower, but all economy hotels had been full
Anyway we didn't give up to look for a shower, and finally we found it We got information that there was a place where shower rooms would be available from a tourist information center,so we got there straight away! It was like a youth accommodation, and we could use only a shower room without booking a room. And besides,it cost just €1-2 per person So,it was really valuable for us,except the location... ( It was closer to the nearest station as well)
It was really warm at the day time,so we were staying not in our tent but in the shade of the tree which we found to take a nap at the day time.

While bands were playing, some autograph sessions were held at the festival site. We saw the gig from Vader to Malevolent Creation at the second day. It was comfortable temperature at the night time, but it was so warm every day time, and besides after the gig such as Vader, everybody should have gotten sweat,so I wondered how they took a shower

I was especially looking foreword to see Primordial and Behemoth at the last day,and both gigs were exciting as I expected I thought they were the best gigs in those days for both bands. Finally when Marduk was playing,a vocalist of Dimension Zero who'd been previously singing in Marduk joined for a song,so we could see both vocalists were singing together at the stage!

I enjoyed the festival, but what I was only upset is my boots(New Rock ones) were stolen in the last morning I know I made a mistake as I put them outside of our tent only for the last night, and besides, the tent was set close to a road to go out from the camping site,so I suppose it was easy to stole them when the audience left there, especially,by car. Anyway they were my favorite boots,so I'm definitely not going to put any shoes nor boots outside of the tent any more.

It wasn't so a big festival, comparing with others which I saw in this summer, but actually this festival went with my taste the most. So,hopefully I'll go to this festival again in the next summer?? I wish I had a driver's licence....
